Introduction

As always, greetings to all readers of "Daltons in History"!!

I start with an apology. The reason this edition of "Daltons in History" is appearing later than usual is entirely down to me and other pressures on my time. As everyone knows we try to adhere to our timetable and put the latest edition up on the website as soon after the beginning of the month as possible. Sometimes, for one reason or another, this does not happen and I trust we are forgiven. The officers and committee of the DGS are all volunteers who give of their time freely and generously and we try to maintain high standards of content and presentation. Do please let us know if you have any suggestions for how we might improve "Daltons in History".

Again, I have to reiterate the plea from our Editor, Dairne Irwin, for more material for publication in "Daltons in History". You will have noticed that in recent months the number of articles in each issue has diminished considerably, and we urgently need your help. Almost everything that has appeared recently has been written by one of a very small number of regular contributors, mostly officers and committee members. We are of course most grateful to this regular band, but they are beginning to feel very lonely without support from you, our DGS members and readers. Please do let Dairne have any Dalton related articles, notes or snippets of information which will be of general interest to our wide audience. "Daltons in History" is your newsletter and, without your contributions and your support, it cannot survive! This is a matter of great concern to us al and we look forward to your response.

As usual, you will find below all the latest news about DGS events and activities, together with other updates to keep you fully informed about what we are doing.

Future DGS events

For the 2013 Gathering and AGM we are returning to Ireland. We will be based in Dublin, as we were in 2005, and the event takes place over the weekend of Fri/Sat/Sun 26th/27th/28th July 2013. We are staying at the Ashling Hotel, where we were accommodated in 2005. Since then the hotel has been considerably refurbished and I know that we will be very well looked after. You can see more about the Ashling Hotel on their website at www.ashlinghotel.ie. The programme will concentrate on Dalton families with Irish ancestry. Full details about the Gathering have now been published and will be found in the "Forthcoming Gatherings" section of this website – just click here or follow the link on the left of this page or consult the article following these notes. The details have also been distributed to all members of the Society with Volume 57 of the DGS Journal for December 2012, which was sent out at the end of January.

Registration forms and deposits have been received from a number of you and others have been making enquiries and putting together plans to be in Dublin at the end of July. To date we have about 30 registrations. It will be most helpful if those of you still to register can do so as soon as possible in order that we have a clear view of the likely numbers attending. We then have the best opportunity to ensure that the more detailed arrangements that we are making for the weekend can accommodate you all.

Please register your interest as soon as you can and, to guarantee your reservation, by no later than the end of April . We will look forward to seeing many DGS members and their families in Dublin, and particularly those with Irish Dalton ancestry.

As announced at the last Annual General Meeting, plans are now being made for 2014 and 2015. It had been suggested that the Burgundy area of France might be a possibility for 2014 but further investigation has presented difficulties in making suitable arrangements. We have therefore decided to base the 2014 Gathering in East Anglia, UK and we will announce further details soon. We still hope to return to the United States and visit Virginia in 2015. It has also been proposed that we return to South Wales, UK in 2016. The DGS committee is actively taking these plans forward and we will be making further more detailed announcements in the coming months about locations and dates. So watch this space!

And, as we like to plan ahead and explore other options for our annual gathering events, if you have any particular thoughts about where you might like to meet, or a particular Dalton theme you think we should incorporate, we would really like to hear from you with your ideas.

The Dalton International DNA Project (DIDP)

Our DNA project continues to attract considerable interest with a regular stream of enquiries about joining being received by myself and Karen Dalton Preston as administrators of the project. Last September we published a DIDP Update and this can be found in the "Dalton DNA Project" section of this website. Click here. This includes an up to date list of genetic family coordinators and details of the new reports that we now plan to publish during the first half of 2013. I have recently been in contact with Chris Pomery about the more detailed structure and content of these, and we are working together on their preparation.

We are indebted to Chris for all his assistance with the project over the past seven years, which includes the preparation of three issues of the very comprehensive project progress report, and most recently a series of six reports covering individual genetic families. He has also given informative presentations at our annual Gatherings on several occasions. We now have some 180 participants in the project, including three new recruits at last year’s Yorkshire Gathering, and well over 80% are members of one of the 15 identified genetic families.

In March I spoke about DIDP at a Guild of One Name Studies regional meeting held at Wonersh, near Guildford in Surrey. A large audience heard from Maurice Gleeson, Brian Swann and myself about the benefits of DNA in running a one name study. The contrasts between our DNA projects were quite remarkable and I learnt some very interesting points from the other two presenters. Judging by the question and answer session at the end, I think the audience found the meeting informative and useful. There is no doubt that the interest in genetic genealogy is growing all the time – already this year the Guild has run a national one day seminar and DNA was a major topic at the Who Do You Think You Are Live show held at Olympia in London in February.

The DGS Journal

Volume 57 of the DGS Journal for December 2012 was printed and distributed to members in January. All members, both in the UK and overseas, should have received their copies. If you have not received your copy please contact your local DGS secretary.

As always this latest volume of our award winning Journal will contain much of interest and you will find details of the contents in a separate section below. If you are not a DGS member, please think about joining the Society. This will entitle you to receive the Journal regularly, and much more. Full details are in the "Join the DGS" section of this website, or just click here.

John always welcomes articles and other items for publication in the Journal, and material for publication should be sent to him as early as possible. This will enable him to plan the content of the next and future issues. The deadline for contributions for Volume 58 of the DGS Journal, due for publication by the end of June 2013, will be 15 May 2013. John is happy to advise and assist contributors and, if you have any questions or need help, please contact him by email at johndalton78@hotmail.com.

Back issues of the DGS Journal continue to be available. On this website you can access the "DGS Journal Index" from the homepage or by clicking here. Here you will find a full synopsis of the contents of the Journal of the Dalton Genealogical Society commencing with Volume 1 published back in 1970 through to Volume 41 published in December 2004. Lists of contents are given for Volumes 42 to 57 and the full synopses will be uploaded in due course. Copies of all back numbers are available for purchase and these can be obtained through your local secretary using the order form that you will find on the link above. For 2013, the DGS Annual Gathering is being held in Ireland and will be based at the Ashling Hotel in Dublin, conveniently situated near the city centre. This event will take place from Friday 26th to Monday 29th July 2013.

The Dalton Genealogical Society extends an invitation to all DGS members and their families to attend the 2013 Gathering of the Society in Dublin, Ireland from Friday 26th to Monday 29th July. All will be welcome, and the theme of the weekend will be the origins and the history of Irish Dalton families. Coupled with this we will review some of the projects that the Society is working on and look ahead to the future.

The weekend will include the opportunity to visit a number of interesting places both inside and outside Dublin, including some with direct Dalton connections, together with talks about Dalton family history and, of course, the opportunity to meet and chat with fellow members. The DGS Annual Dinner will take place on the Saturday evening.

Full details of the programme for the weekend, costs and booking arrangements will be found below. A note about travel arrangements:

It is anticipated that many delegates will want to combine their stay in Dublin with visits to other parts of Ireland. There are a number of travel options. You can fly to Dublin which offers good international connections. The Irish airlines are Aer Lingus (www.aerlingus.com) and Ryanair (www.ryanair.com). Many other airlines also fly into Dublin.

The best way to get around Ireland is by car, and it is easy to arrange a hire car for pick up at the airport. Visit www.auto-europe.co.uk/car-hire/Ireland.cfm, which is one of many options available to obtain a competitive quote.

Alternatively, there are good car and passenger ferry services from mainland UK to Ireland, with Holyhead to Dublin or to Dun Laoghaire, and Fishguard to Rosslare probably being the best options. Visit www.directferries.co.uk/ireland.htm for further information. Dublin is about one and a half hours drive from Rosslare.

If you do not want to drive a car, Ireland offers extensive railway and bus services. Details can be found at www.irishrail.ie and www.buseireann.ie respectively.

The following article was published in the Journal in December 2010 and I thought it might be worthwhile publishing in "Daltons in History" as it is so interesting. I have asked DGS member Jeff Dalton for permission which he has given me. See the full article in DGS Journal 53 of December 2010, Pages 11 - 16.

Charles Dalton – my Great Great Grandfather

Charles Dalton was born in the parish of St. Luke's, Chelsea London on the 24th of November. The year of his birth has not precisely been determined as research has revealed some confusion as to the exact year he was born – 1832 or 1834.

According to his grave stone he was born in 1832. Other records such as his military enlistment indicate 1832 while his NSW Police enlistment indicates 1834. I and other family researchers are inclined to believe that it is 1832. A birth certificate from London is still yet to be tracked down to confirm the exact year of his birth.

Little is known of Charles’s parents other than his father Charles Senior was a London Jeweller. His Mother Sarah Dalton (nee Lewis) died on the 12th of June 1887 aged 83 years and was interred in East End Finchley Cemetery in grave number R.17,132.

It is not known how many siblings Charles had nor of their family extensions. All that is known is that it appears they did not stay in London. According to one of Charles’s daughters, Adelaide "The English Daltons. Of this family, some went to America, some to France and others to Ireland but all came from English stock".

Charles Arrives in Australia

Until recently it was believed that Charles arrived in Australia on the 22nd of March 1861 aboard the P&O mail steamer the SS Northam. It was believed that he was part of the Vice Regal party of the incoming NSW Governor Sir John Young. In the NSW register book of ships’ arrivals, Charles and his wife-to-be, Jessie, are noted immediately below the entry for Sir John and Lady Young – but without their names being stated. It is highly likely that they were the: "man and maid servant". The handwritten, shipping arrival entry is set out so in the register; and reads:

Throughout their marriage, Charles and Jessie produced 11 Children. (It is believed that 2 died at or near birth. Death records are not absolute when it comes to the death of infants from this era).

James Burrows Dalton: born 16th February, 1866

Jessie Sarah Dalton: born 22nd January, 1868 (believed to have died near birth)

Ernestine Dalton: birth date not yet clear.

Charles Albin Dalton: born 21st July, 1869 (my great Grandfather)

Jessie Maria Dalton: born 1st August, 1873

Antionette Mary Dalton: born 1st April, 1873

George Conrad Dalton: born 13th June, 1875

Adelaide Dalton: born 17th June, 1877

Roberta Alexandria Dalton: born 1st July, 1879

Emily Emma Sarah Dalton: born 21st October, 1882

Much of the story of the life of Charles Dalton has been pieced together by Great Grandson Dalton Neville. (Grandson of Antionette Mary Dalton).

The next steps for research between is to go in two directions, the first is to continue the search for the descendants of Charles and Jessie Dalton. The second is to try and locate the birth certificate for Charles Dalton and to determine the number of his siblings and any other information pertaining to his parents Charles Dalton Senior and Sarah (Lewis) Dalton.

We do know that a previous article on Charles Dalton was published in the DGS in Sep 1991 and if anyone has a copy of that article, both I and Dalton Neville would appreciate a copy. Also if anyone is a descendant of Charles and Jessie or for that matter a descendant of Charles Dalton Senior and Sarah (Lewis) Dalton we would like to hear from you.

"This is the article as it appears in DGS Journal Volume 19, Number 1:

19.5 Charles Holland Dalton married 13th August, 1868

Does anyone have a Charles Holland among their ancestors? He was born about 1832, probably in Marylebone, London and his father was described on Charles's marriage certificate as a gentleman. The marriage took place on 13th August, 1868 at the Parish Church of St Sepulchre's in Northampton. The bride was Amelia Jones, daughterof Thomas Jones, a merchant of Sheep Street which is the main street of Northampton. At that time Charles was an insurance superintendent, living in Buchanan Street, Glasgow.

Later the family moved to Manchester and then to Hale in Cheshire. The 1881 Census for Altrincham shows that they had three sons, Herbert then aged 11, Reginald aged 10 and Charles John aged 3.

Mrs Noëlle Andreatta is a new DGS member who lives in Cootamundra, NSW. She would be delighted to hear from anyone who might be connected to her Dalton family which is as follows:

Her second Great Grandfather, Patrick William Dalton came to Australia from Dublin in 1808 and married Jane Greer (b. Glasgow, Scotland 1820). He died in 1865 in Long Swamp, NSW and she died in Burwood, NSW in 1872. Noelle’s father was John Thomas Bourke (b. 1920) and her mother was his second wife, Jennifer Blanche Dalton, who went to Dublin in 1943 due to illness and died there in the year 2000. Somehow I seem not to have added a note to the abovementioned death certificate in explanation.

I was doing some research for Australian DGS member Virginia Higgins in the Manchester area. I ordered the certificate that was published in March, 2013 "Daltons in History" thinking it might be connected to her family but it is not. I put it on the website in case it tied in with someone else’s Dalton history in the area. It might be good to say in the next edition of "Daltons in History" that by right-clicking the mouse over the certificate and selecting "view image" you get a better view of it. Sorry to all readers for my oversight.

This information sent to me by Liz Edwards of the Orange Historical Society regarding their Dalton Exhibition to be held in November this year.

This is of course connected to the Dalton family which was central to the Gathering in Australia in March 2009 although many other Australian Daltons were also involved. "Duntryleague" is the house (now Golf Club) built by James Dalton in 1876 and where we held our meeting.

Subject: RE: Orange Dalton Exhibition

Hi Maureen,

Thank you very much for making contact with me. Yes, there will be an exhibition in November, organised by Orange & District Historical Society, for which I am publicity officer. The opening night has been fixed for Thursday, 7th November at Duntryleague, where we will have the use of the adjoining Alderton and Dedar rooms. The opening event will be early evening drinks and finger-food and we are hoping to attract a high-profile person to do the honours. People attending that will have a preview of the exhibition. Bookings are essential as there is limited space.

We will have the exhibition open daily from 8th to 17th November, 2013 from 10am to 4pm, with an entry fee of $5 for adults; $3 children.

The exhibition will feature items from the society’s collection as well as from the general community.

We are also organising guided tours of some of the houses in Orange built for members of the Dalton family. Details have not yet been finalised. There will be a charge for this.

We will also show sometime during the week the 1927 silent movie about Orange which features footage of Dalton’s Store and also M F Dalton, who was a member of Canobolas Shire Council. There will be a charge for this also.

This series of events will be the society’s major fund-raiser for the year. Any profits will go towards the society’s continuing work in researching and preserving the history of Orange and district.

Dear Maureen and David,

Thank you so much for your prompt and detailed replies. I did watch the video of Robert Bruce relating some of the Dalton Family History and it is certainly a very interesting and fascinating story. It is difficult for us to imagine a 13 year old boy travelling alone from Ireland to Orange in 1847 to meet his father who he has never seen.

Maureen, congratulations on the organisation of the Dalton family Gathering. Ron and I have been involved in a huge family gathering at Terara in New South Wales in 2008 and know it can be quite daunting but a wonderful occasion especially when family are travelling from all over the globe.

We have been to Bathurst but not visited Orange so hopefully we can add the district to our next trip.

Thank you both again for your kind assistance. If I find out any further information on the land transfers I will let you know. As mentioned it may involve a trip to the archive dungeons of the New South Wales Lands Department.

Seamus Patrick Dalton was baptized on 2 March, 2013, at Blessed Pope John XXIII Church in Fort Myers, Florida. He was born 5 June, 2012 and weighed 7 lbs. 12 oz. and was 20” long. His parents are Kristen and William Dalton. Seamus is the third child in the family. His oldest sibling, also William, called Billy, will be 5 years old in August and his sister, Tina, is 3. William “Bill” is a Dalton DNA testee and belongs to Genetic Family D. His great grandfather, William Dalton, was born in Tankerstown, Co. Tipperary in 1850 and immigrated to the U.S. at about age 18. The event was attended by “Genetic Cousins” Regina and Cathy Negrycz (cousins to testee Robert Dalton in Brigown, Co. Cork), and father/husband Ray Negrycz.

I hope that you all enjoyed a Happy Easter with family and friends. Now that David and I are living close to my parents, we enjoyed a wonderful Easter dinner with them.

We are finally settled into our home office. We have added 2 desk/workstations to one of the bedrooms. Now that I have a desk and file drawers, I have my DGS files unpacked and am ready to get back into a normal routine (whatever "normal" is).

We are bracing for the demolition of our kitchen, which begins the first week in April. I know the process will be stressful and inconvenient, but I am focusing on the beautiful outcome!

Thank you to those who did contribute to April 2013's "Daltons in History" and thank you to the Chairman for his plea, once again, in his notes this month.

This issue of "Daltons in History" is still short on content so, Please continue to contribute!

Please send me any ideas you may have for future articles or areas of research we could look at. New ideas are definitely needed!! Maybe the DGS Committee could start putting something up about their Dalton family origins!! How about it?

Please consider contributing a short description of any Dalton-related travels you may have undertaken anywhere in the world. Also members who are travelling to do research, visit a Dalton-connected site, or have made a connection to a distant cousin through the DGS. might be interested in letting other members know what they are doing through "Daltons in History". Photos from your travels would be appreciated. Also, it would be a way of helping members get to know each other a little better, and might help members who are widely dispersed geographically to feel a bit more connected.
