from Millicent V. Craig In Part I of Argentinian Daltons, printed in the November 2000 issue of "Daltons in History", it was noted that the majority of the Irish who emigrated to Argentina came from the Westmeath/Longford border of Ireland. Those Dalton emigrants whose Townlands are noted in the data, can be traced to a section of Westmeath along what is now Route 393. On the north side of this road are the Towns of Miltown, Moyvore and Mullingar. They are also just north of Mount Dalton. The farthest emigration point for the Daltons or their spouses was Edgeworthstown, County Longford about 30 miles to the north of Route 393. This reduces the area of search for lost relatives. The one exception was VIII below, Michael Dalton who was from Tuam, County Galway, Ireland. Whether there were other events in history besides the enforcement of the Penal Laws that caused this great migration is still not clear. It began before the potato famine of 1845. Extracts From "National Honour Roll of the
Great War" 1914-1918 The "National Roll of Honour" was published by the National Publishing Company and contains information about privates and non-commissioned officers (and a few officers) who served in the First World War, and some civilians and merchant seamen. Fourteen volumes appeared before the project came to a halt, possibly on the liquidation of the publishers. It is a valuable tool for family hstorians since the addresses of the servicemen are listed and can be checked against censuses prior to 1914 for potential ancestral links. compiled by Millicent V. Craig Between 1892 and 1954, over 12 million emigrants passed through Ellis Island on their way to freedom and a new life. Over the past few years, the Ellis Island Foundation has built The American Immigrant Wall of Honor on which you may have the names of your ancestors inscribed. In addition, an imposing Museum and American Family Immigration Center is being built and will be completed in the Spring of 2001. From this center one will be able to access the immigration records of ancestors both on site and on line for a modest fee. Thus far, there are over 50 Daltons on the Wall of Honor, but only a fraction of those Daltons who entered through the Port of New York during the above time period. Dalton Emigrants Ellen Mary Dalton, Ireland, 656 Please remember that this is an on going project and if you wish to have your ancestor's names inscribed on the wall or to learn more about the ships' passenger manifests that will be available next spring, visit the web site: http://www.ellisisland.org/history.html |
