INVITATION AND DETAILS

The Dalton Genealogical Society extends an invitation to all DGS members and their families to attend the Annual Gathering of Daltons in Hampton, New Hampshire, USA on October 6, 7, 8, 2006.  In 1638 the first Dalton colonists arrived at Hampton in the Massachusetts Bay Colony and for more than 100 years all Daltons of New Hampshire, the lower section of Maine and northeastern Massachusetts descended from this line of Daltons.

How the colonists lived, survived and prospered will be the subject of speakers from the Hampton Historical Society and Tuck Museum.  Of prime importance to all members will be a  presentation of the latest developments in the Dalton International DNA Project.   Our second day will be spent in Newburyport, MA, the restored sea captain's town, where branches of this family emigrated and left their mark. Mr Jay Williamson, curator of the Cushing Museum is hosting the DGS group for the day.  Those who can spend extra time in the area will find an abundance of historical attractions.

A Holiday Weekend

In the U. S., the October dates fall on a holiday weekend. Columbus Day is celebrated on Monday, October 9, 2006 and the holiday allows U. S. delegates an extra day to travel to their homes before returning to work on Tuesday, October 10, 2006.

Because it is a holiday weekend and the foliage is likely to be turning, Hampton, NH and Newburyport, MA will experience an influx of tourists. With that in mind, lodging accommodations were arranged over a year in advance.

Transportation to Hampton, N. H.

Logan International Airport, Boston (MA) and Manchester (NH) International Airport are about equidistant to Hampton, around 40 miles.  Within the U. S. two discount carriers service New England - Jet Blue to Boston; Southwest Airlines to Manchester.  Train service is available from Boston's North Station to the nearby town of Exteter, NH on Amtrak's Downeaster.  Pick up from and to Exeter will be arranged with advance notice. The Downeaster schedule is printed on their web site. http://www.thedowneaster.com/ C&J Trailways Bus offers non-stop service to Newburyport, MA from South Station, Boston.  The schedule is posted on their web site.  Advance notice must be given on the Registration Form so that pick-up can be arranged in Newburyport.  The schedule is posted on their web site.  http://www.cjtrailways.com/

Two routes are available to Hampton, NH from Boston's Logan International Airport. Drivers can take interstate 95 to route 27 (Exeter exit) and follow it 1 mile to Route 1. Lamies Inn and Tavern is on left corner.

From Boston airport take scenic route 1, and follow it to Lamies at the corner of route 27.

From the Manchester airport, take highway 101 east to route 27 (Exeter) and proceed 1 mile to route 1. Lamies is on the left corner.  Ample parking in front and in the rear.

Gatherings offer a unique opportunity for "cousins"  across continents or from the same region of a country to meet, share research, discover mutual relationships, plan future research projects and forge relationships that will last a lifetime.  The Dalton Genealogical Society takes pride in being a catalyst to effect such results through its genealogical/genetic/social approach of bringing people together. Several of the delegates have met each other through e-mail correspondence but for most it will be the first time to hug or shake hands.

Thus the October 6, 7, 8, 2006 Gathering of Daltons in Hampton, NH provides a platform to further the standard and future approach to reach your goals.  The Program addresses past history and future possibilities through DNA testing. The present status of your research will be the focus of several windows of time beginning with Friday evening on October 6, 2006 at Lamies Inn and Tavern.  A period of two hours, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm has been set aside for registration and getting acquainted in the Goody Cole Room. (This room will remain available until 9:00pm). Dine with your new acquaintances at 7:00pm in the Salt Box Restaurant or at a restaurant of your choice.

On Saturday, October 7, 2006, there is a full program at St James Lodge.  Delegates who wish to display photos, charts, etc. may come to the Lodge by 9:00 am and set up their individual displays on the tables provided.  At 10:00am the proceedings will commence with remarks from the Chairman, Michael Neale Dalton. Delegates will participate in the program by discussing their earliest recorded ancestor or that of their group.

It is expected that the formal presentations will conclude about 3:00pm. (See Program) From 3.00pm to 6:00 pm groups may hold working sessions in various sections of the Lodge; another group will hold a separate meeting during that period of time; and a third group will attend an event outside of the Lodge.  When you leave the Lodge, take your displays with you. We request that you return to Lamies for the DGS dinner at 7:00 pm and dine with your newly found family for a social evening. Dinner will be in the Goody Cole Room. After dinner discussions can continue in the Tavern.  On Sunday, October 8, 2006, make plans to travel with your newly found "cousins" to the Newburyport events.

The DGS committee and officers look forward to meeting all of you and if you have any special requests, please contact your American Secretary, Millicent Craig, 880 Ames Court Palo Alto, CA 94303. Email:  Millicenty@aol.com

As a result of this Gathering there will be plenty of potential articles for the DGS Journal and we trust that you will share your ancestry with our international Dalton community. Who knows how many "cousins" are out there actively seeking their families?   DGS Editor, John Dalton is always available to provide assistance.  Email: mailto:JohnDalton78@hotmail.com/.

You may be able to help one of these Daltons with his/her issue. Please contact the submitter directly.  Judy is working on the family tree and has come to a stumbling block. Here’s what she knows:  Robert Benjamin Dalton was born 7-25-1893 in Oklahoma City, died 5-2-1961 in Carthage, buried in Joplin, MO.  She can’t find out whether he had siblings. His father was William Benjamin Dalton from Kingfisher. She can’t find his siblings or parents.  Do you have any information that can help? Judy has exhausted all avenues. JForth@polytainersinc.com

George Mullen writes that James Dalton was born 1845 in Kilbeggan, Westmeath and married a minor, Johanna English from Tipperary.  They married in Brooklyn in 1866 after receiving dispensation from the Bishop.  Their parents were Richard Dalton and Mary Maguire and John and Elizabeth English. All were born in Ireland.  He had tried to follow this family via the census as well as through city directories.  He thought he had found James and Johanna Dalton in 1870 in Springfield Mass.  He found that the children were the right ages and were named after his father and her father.  She turned out to be a Lawton and his father was Garrett Dalton In doing his wife's ancestry he found that newly married couples would change their last names and many times took the wife's last name.  His wife is French.  He decided to look under James and Johanna English.  Lo and behold he found in Manhattan's 7th ward such a couple of the right ages with 2 children of the right ages for a 1866 wedding.  In 1880 census this couple moved across the Hudson river to Jersey City, NJ and they have 7 children.  Have any other Daltons encountered name change and does anyone know anything about James Dalton and Johanna English? gmullen@epix.net

Pat Setser writes that according to the Census her earliest known relative is Joshua S Daulton her great grandfather b. about 1829.  The Census records date his birth about 1829 but different Census records give two birth places - North Carolina and Tennessee.  Can anyone clarify this for Pat?  mailto:Applecrek@aol.com/
