Introduction

As always, greetings to all readers of "Daltons in History"!!

Let me start by wishing all our readers a very Happy New Year. We hope that 2013 will bring you happiness, good health and good fortune. We also hope that your family history researches will flourish and that you will discover more about the history and ancestry of your Dalton forebears.

Last month our Editor, Dairne Irwin, made a heartfelt plea for more material for publication in "Daltons in History". You will have noticed that the number of articles in each issue has diminished considerably and we need your help. Please do let Dairne have any Dalton related articles, notes or snippets of information which will be of general interest to our wide audience. "Daltons in History" is your newsletter and, without your contributions, it cannot survive!

As usual, you will find below all the latest news about DGS events and activities, together with other updates to keep you fully informed about what we are doing.

Future DGS events

For the 2013 Gathering and AGM we are returning to Ireland. We will be based in Dublin, as we were in 2005, and the event takes place over the weekend of Fri/Sat/Sun 26th/27th/28th July 2013. We are staying at the Ashling Hotel, where we were accommodated in 2005. Since then the hotel has been considerably refurbished and I know that we will be very well looked after. You can see more about the Ashling Hotel on their website at www.ashlinghotel.ie. The programme will concentrate on Dalton families with Irish ancestry. Full details about the Gathering have now been published and will be found in the "Forthcoming Gatherings" section of this website – just click here or follow the link on the left of this page or consult the article following these notes. The details have also been distributed to all members of the Society with Volume 57 of the DGS Journal for December 2012, which will reach members during this month. Please register your interest as soon as you can. We will look forward to seeing many DGS members there and particularly those with Irish Dalton ancestry.

As announced at the Annual General Meeting, plans are now being made for 2014 and 2015 with the Burgundy area of France and Virginia, USA as the suggested locations. It has also been proposed that we return to South Wales, UK, maybe in 2016. The DGS committee is actively taking these plans forward and we will be making further more detailed announcements in the coming months about locations and dates. So watch this space!

And, as we like to plan ahead and explore other options for our annual Gathering events, if you have any particular thoughts about where you might like to meet, or a particular Dalton theme you think we should incorporate, we would really like to hear from you with your ideas.

The Dalton International DNA Project (DIDP)

Our DNA project continues to attract considerable interest with a regular stream of enquiries about joining being received by myself and Karen Dalton Preston as administrators of the project. In September we published a DIDP Update and this can be found in the "Dalton DNA Project" section of this website. Click here. This includes an up to date list of genetic family coordinators and details of the new reports that we now plan to publish early in 2013.

We are indebted to Chris Pomery for all his assistance with the project over the past six years, which includes the preparation of three issues of the very comprehensive project progress report, and most recently a series of six reports covering individual genetic families. He has also given informative presentations at our annual gatherings on several occasions. We now have some 180 participants in the project, including three new recruits at the Yorkshire gathering, and well over 80% are members of one of the 15 identified genetic families.

The DGS Journal

Volume 57 of the DGS Journal for December 2012 is now being printed and it will be distributed to members shortly. As always this latest volume of our award winning Journal will contain much of interest and, if you are not a DGS member, please think about joining the Society. This will entitle you to receive the Journal regularly, and much more. Full details are in the "Join the DGS" section of this website, or just click here.

John always welcomes articles and other items for publication in the Journal, and material for publication should be sent to him as early as possible. This will enable him to plan the content of the next and future issues. John is happy to advise and assist contributors and, if you have any questions or need help, please contact him by email at johndalton78@hotmail.com.

Back issues of the DGS Journal continue to be available. On this website you can access the "DGS Journal Index" from the homepage or by clicking here. Here you will find a full synopsis of the contents of the Journal of the Dalton Genealogical Society commencing with Volume 1 published back in 1970 through to Volume 41 published in December 2004. Lists of contents are given for Volumes 42 to 56 and the full synopses will be uploaded in due course. Copies of all back numbers are available for purchase and these can be obtained through your local secretary using the order form that you will find on the link above. Details of prices, including postage and packing, will be found there as well.

We are most grateful to DGS member Mrs Pat Robinson, who holds stocks of back numbers for the Society and arranges for their distribution in response to requests from the local secretaries (address: Mallards, 3 High Street, The Green, Barrington, Cambridge CB2 5QX, UK email: gandprobinson@waitrose.com.)

Conclusion

Enjoy this month’s issue of "Daltons in History", your regular monthly update on everything that is happening in the world of Dalton family history. We will be back again in February 2013.

Thank you for your attention and once again, a Happy New Year to all

Yours very sincerely

Michael Neale Dalton
Chairman and Honorary Life President of the Dalton Genealogical Society

For 2013, the DGS Annual Gathering is being held in Ireland and will be based at the Ashling Hotel in Dublin, conveniently situated near the city centre. This event will take place from Friday 26th to Monday 29th July 2013.

The Dalton Genealogical Society extends an invitation to all DGS members and their families to attend the 2013 Gathering of the Society in Dublin, Ireland from Friday 26th to Monday 29th July. All will be welcome, and the theme of the weekend will be the origins and the history of Irish Dalton families. Coupled with this we will review some of the projects that the Society is working on and look ahead to the future.

The weekend will include the opportunity to visit a number of interesting places both inside and outside Dublin, including some with direct Dalton connections, together with talks about Dalton family history and, of course, the opportunity to meet and chat with fellow members. The DGS Annual Dinner will take place on the Saturday evening.

Full details of the programme for the weekend, costs and booking arrangements will be found below. If you require any further information or have any queries, please contact Michael Neale Dalton (DGS Chairman & 2013 Gathering Organiser - email: michaelndalton@aol.com) who will be pleased to assist.

A note about travel arrangements:

It is anticipated that many delegates will want to combine their stay in Dublin with visits to other parts of Ireland. There are a number of travel options. You can fly to Dublin which offers good international connections. The Irish airlines are Aer Lingus (www.aerlingus.com) and Ryanair (www.ryanair.com). Many other airlines also fly into Dublin.

The best way to get around Ireland is by car, and it is easy to arrange a hire car for pick up at the airport. Visit www.auto-europe.co.uk/car-hire/Ireland.cfm, which is one of many options available to obtain a competitive quote.

Alternatively, there are good car and passenger ferry services from mainland UK to Ireland, with Holyhead to Dublin or to Dun Laoghaire, and Fishguard to Rosslare probably being the best options. Visit www.directferries.co.uk/ireland.htm for further information. Dublin is about one and a half hours drive from Rosslare.

If you do not want to drive a car, Ireland offers extensive railway and bus services. Details can be found at www.irishrail.ie and www.buseireann.ie respectively.

If you need advice, guidance or assistance with your travel plans, please contact Michael who will do his best to help.

A note about the Ashling Hotel:

The venue for the Gathering is the Ashling Hotel. This is where we were accommodated for the 2005 Gathering and since then the hotel has been very considerably refurbished. We anticipate that we will be well looked after at the Ashling and further details can be found on their website here.

In the October 2012 issue of “Daltons in History”, the last instalment in this series covered the year 2001. This personal account of the history of the Dalton Genealogical Society by Michael Dalton continues with the sixteenth instalment, commencing at the beginning of 2002.

2002 is remembered by me as the year that our daughter Julia was married. The earlier part of the year was taken up with preparations for this important family event which took place on Saturday 22 June. It is hard to believe that Julia and Neil have now been married for over ten years and that Kate and I have three grandchildren! The wedding was of course recorded in the DGS Journal and here is a photograph of the happy couple:

Julia and Neil on their wedding day – 22 June, 2002

Turning to more DGS related matters, Volume 36 of the DGS Journal was published in June 2002 and there we find a report from Millicent Craig about the DGS website, the “Daltons in History” newsletter and the Dalton Data Bank. Millicent records that the website is in its fifth year, and the monthly issues of the newsletter contain original Dalton writings supplied by Michael Cayley, Mike Dalton, Lucy Slater, Rodney Dalton, Howard Dalton and many others. Reviewing the content of Volume 5 of "Daltons in History" (all to be found in the archive on this website) we find articles on a very wide range of Dalton topics including:

• Calendar of the Fine Rolls, Parts I, II and III – Dalton references extracted by Michael Cayley

• French Connections and the Apostrophe – referring to D’Altons by Milllicent

• Dennis Dalton of California by Mike Dalton

• Commentary on the Colonists Papers, Parts I and II by Millicent

• Illinois Naturalization Records, Sections I, II and III – Dalton references

• Dalton Coats of Arms, Parts I, II and III by Lucy Slater

• Thurnham and other Lancashire and Yorkshire Recusants by Michael Cayley

• Founding Fathers, Virginia by Millicent

• Daltons in the Royal Navy by Millicent

• John Adams, Tristram Dalton, and colleagues by Millicent

• Only A Sketch Remains – about the monument at Mount Dalton, Co Westmeath, Ireland – by Millicent and Cecelia Lange

This selected extract from the index to Volume 5 of "Daltons in History" demonstrates the breadth of material being published. In addition hundreds of queries had been received – these were coming mainly through the guest page facility on the website – and led to the feature "Daltons to the Forefront", a regular round up on enquiries. Some of the responses were handled by the Dalton Query Team launched in January 2001. As of May 2002, there had been over 33,000 visits to the website. Millicent’s enthusiasm and diligence in handling all this extended also to the Dalton Data Bank, launched as a separate website on 1 September, 2001. By May 2002, this had already grown from an initial 10,000 to over 26,000 entries in the files. Much of the new data related to English counties, concentrating on those where the Dalton population is highest, Yorkshire, Lancashire and London/Middlesex, and taking information from parish registers, directories and census returns. By May there were entries in the Data Bank for a total of 15 counties. Data relating to the United States was also being added state by state and sections had been started for other countries, including Argentina, Canada, Ireland and South Africa. Millicent is to be congratulated on her enterprise in forging ahead with the Society’s online presence – she had already set herself a target when she wrote that there must be upwards of 750,000 persons of Dalton descent worldwide whom we eventually want to reach from our desktops!

For our Annual Gathering in 2002, our then Treasurer Howard Dalton had volunteered to make arrangements for us to return to Yorkshire and stay at Pickering, near his home. The local newspaper headlined their article about our visit "Daltons head for Pickering", and so we did. Kate and I had spent nearly two weeks travelling around Northern England and over the border into Scotland and we arrived in Pickering on the afternoon of Friday 30 August, 2002 to settle into the Old Manse Hotel, where most of the party were staying. That evening Howard and Jen laid on an "at home" evening at their delightful home in the small village of Wrelton a short distance away from Pickering, and we had the opportunity to catch up with everyone and meet several new members attending their first Gathering. These included Gerald Milner of Irish Dalton descent and his wife Margaret from Shoreham, Sussex, and Mel and Dairne Irwin from Lancashire, new to us then but now well known by all for their work as DGS Treasurer and Editor of "Daltons in History". Also newcomers then were David and Audrey Dalton from Holmfirth. Millicent was present and she demonstrated the Dalton website to those not fully familiar with the extent of our online presence.

The theme for the weekend was John de Dalton, bailiff of Pickering Castle in the early 14th century and Howard had lined up some very interesting visits for the Saturday and Sunday. But before this there was business to be attended to on the Saturday morning with a short committee meeting followed by the AGM. At the AGM it was my pleasure to congratulate both Millicent and Lucy on reaching the age of 80 during the previous year. Howard was able to give a very satisfactory report on our financial position with a surplus of income over expenditure in excess of £600 and a capital balance at the end of the year of nearly £2,500. The officers and committee were re-elected with Howard J Dalton being appointed as minutes secretary and the election of new member, Mel Irwin, to the committee. Maureen and Millicent both gave very encouraging reports of our overseas activities.

Following an excellent buffet lunch served in the conservatory, we walked up the hill to Pickering Castle where we were met by John Rushton, one of Ryedale’s foremost historians, who spoke to us about John de Dalton. His lively and informative talk gave us an insight into the history of Pickering, its castle and the influence that John de Dalton had as keeper of the castle for Thomas, Earl of Lancaster in the early 1300s. Eventually John fell from grace due to being in the employ of Thomas who ultimately lost his head. After his talk, John Rushton took us on an extensive tour of the castle remains with particular emphasis on Dalton’s role in its reconstruction and development. John Rushton also wrote an article for us published in the DGS Journal (Vol 37 pp 18-27 Dec 2002).

The group follows John Rushton into the castle
John Rushton tells us about the castle and John de Dalton........
..........and members of the DGS listen intently!
Then we follow John up onto the castle ramparts.

On the way back to the hotel we were able to visit Pickering parish church where Dalton would have worshipped. The church is famous for its medieval wall paintings and John Rushton explained these in some detail. In the evening we enjoyed a very good DGS Annual Dinner at the Old Manse Hotel, which provided the opportunity to socialise and mingle with friends old and new.

On the Sunday Howard had arranged for us to visit nearby Foulbridge Hall at Stainton, a place that was originally built around 1290 and where undoubtedly John de Dalton would have stayed in the early 14th century. The story of the rediscovery of this hall is a fascinating one and it was told to us by Mrs Jill Nutt, the present owner, who in 1981 opened up this impressive timber framed structure that had been hidden away for some 500 years as a result of being converted into a three storey farmhouse. Now a Grade 1 listed building it is a unique surviving example of this type of timber framed building in the North of England. We were indeed fortunate to be able to visit such an interesting place and we much enjoyed both the hall and its extensive grounds.

The Gathering weekend concluded with lunch at the Coachman’s Inn in Stainton before starting our journeys home. As Howard recorded in his article about the weekend in the DGS Journal – it closed with lots of goodbyes and good wishes and a feeling that with the DGS, we have a society that is a little bit special. These are sentiments that I think we all shared and hopefully continue to share today.

2002 had been another good year for the Society and in the next instalment I shall move on to 2003 when we visited South Wales and launched the Dalton DNA Project.

DALTON EXHIBITION – ORANGE, NSW NOVEMBER 2013

DGS Member Robert Bruce has sent information regarding plans by Orange Historical Society to hold a Dalton Exhibition in November 2013. Those who attended the DGS Gathering in Orange in 2009 will remember Robert’s excellent talk on his Dalton family in Orange at the meeting held in Duntryleague, the house built by James Dalton in 1878.

This is a preliminary announcement as plans have not at all been finalised but it seems as though there is a lot of enthusiasm in the city and that the exhibition will go ahead. As soon as further information is available I will let members and readers know. I understand there is a plan to open a museum in Orange eventually and the exhibition is to be part of that planning.

Dalton First of 2013

Dave Edwards in Cooperstown, NY forwarded the following link about a record-size salmon being caught in Ireland. One of the fisherman was a Dalton, so perhaps this is enough of a tie-in that you might want to include it.

Not really genealogy, but perhaps it may encourage the anglers in the DGS to make the trip to Ireland this summer to do a little fishing!

New Years Prayer

Thank you Lord for giving me
The brand new year ahead
Help me live the way I should
As each new day I tread.

Give me gentle wisdom
That I might help a friend
Give me strength and courage
So a shoulder I might lend.

The year ahead is empty
Help me fill it with good things
Each new day filled with joy
And the happiness it brings.

Please give the leaders of our world
A courage born of peace
That they might lead us gently
And all the fighting cease.

Please give to all upon this earth
A heart that's filled with love
A gentle happy way to live
With Your blessings from above.

December has been a roller coaster of activity for us. My "Notes" this month must be short.

We have sold our home in Las Vegas; we signed a contract with a buyer just before Christmas. This move is to be closer to my parents in Florida, now in their mid-80's, who are really need to have family members near-by.

Shortly after the sale of our house was in place, we were off to Florida to spend Christmas with my parents. This trip had been planned long before we sold the house. It was good to spend the holidays with family. Fortunately, while we were there we also found a home there. The closing date on both homes is February 1st, but we are hoping to speed things up a bit and be in Florida before the end of January.

Until then, I will be tackling the zillions of tasks that need to be done before the movers arrive.

Things will be pretty hectic for us this month, so please be patient if you don't get a reply to an email right away. My golden-hillls.com email address will continue to be active during and after the move.

Wishing you all a Happy, Healthy New Year!

Karen Dalton Preston
North American Secretary

Thank you for all your contributions during 2012.

This issue of "Daltons in History" doesn't bode well for 2013 as it lacks any support from you our members. Please contribute!

Please send me any ideas you may have for future articles or areas of research we could look at. New ideas are definitely needed!!

Please consider contributing a short description of any Dalton-related travels you may have undertaken anywhere in the world. Also members who are travelling to do research, visit a Dalton-connected site, or have made a connection to a distant cousin through the DGS. might be interested in letting other members know what they are doing through "Daltons in History". Photos from your travels would be appreciated. Also, it would be a way of helping members get to know each other a little better, and might help members who are widely dispersed geographically to feel a bit more connected.

Contributions for the February 2013 issue need to be with me no later than 27th January, 2013. (e-mail: dairneirwin@ntlworld.com). If I don't receive contributions by then they won't be published!

Please continue to stick to the set deadlines!! There is no excuse for missing the deadline - PLAN AHEAD!!

Finally, Mel and I wish you all a very Happy New Year.
